Britain is ‘surveillance society’
mprofaca.cro.net The Global Intelligence News Portal Already the most intensely-monitored country in the world, Britain is now home to a new generation of closed-circuit television cameras. From cameras that are attached to ‘spy’ drones, to talking CCTV, to small wearable camera that offer real-time views Britain is moving further with surveillance technologies. Reuters technology correspondent Matt Cowan reports. Fears that the UK would “sleep-walk into a surveillance society” have become a reality, the government’s information commissioner has said. Richard Thomas, who said he raised concerns two years ago, spoke after research found people’s actions were increasingly being monitored. Researchers highlight “dataveillance”, the use of credit card, mobile phone and loyalty card information, and CCTV. Monitoring of work rates, travel and telecommunications is also rising. There are up to 4.5m CCTV cameras in Britain – about one for every 14 people. But surveillance ranges from US security agencies monitoring telecommunications traffic passing through Britain, to key stroke information used to gauge work rates and GPS information tracking company vehicles, the Report on the Surveillance Society says. It predicts that by 2016 shoppers could be scanned as they enter stores, schools could bring in cards allowing parents to monitor what their children eat, and jobs may be refused to applicants who are seen as a health risk. its their way of working slowly into mind control. can the mind really flow freely when on any level one knows they are being watched. can thoughts really be genuine? perhaps, but crippled if not hindered.

more police “on the beat”. it sounds like a phrase you would hear in serial about a wee girl journalist. this is a stupid comment.

hapelliotte 02.03.11 at 2:03 am

hmmm lets see.

the law abiding majority is not allowed to carry anything for self defense, or even a small lockblade knife (a safety mechanism), yet crime is at an all time high

the government claims near bankruptcy, cutting every program imaginable, yet how much to they spend on this enormous violation of privacy?

freedom, not

@SuperTruth77 but you are wrong :)

SuperTruth77 02.03.11 at 2:38 am

It may not be ‘correct’ to say so but I think this is superb- the sooner we have cameras with live public feeds in every street, workplace, classroom & maybe even home, the better. We can’t afford any more Police ‘on the beat’!

To me, any reluctance to be on camera is prima facie evidence of criminal, maybe even terrorist tendencies.

We in the UK are going down our own glorious route & we don’t need any Americans telling us we’re wrong through some misplaced notion of ‘Liberty’.

@ubuntuhal
Anyone with the know how can tap into your computer’s camera and do that anyway.

MrTerryKay 02.03.11 at 4:12 am

The way he publically humiliated that woman for dropping a cigarette stub is legalised bullying. My police force uses my local paper to publish a weekly page of photographs of people that do just this type of thing. It may be YOU one day, it may be me. Your mind is on your marrage break up or losing your job and house etc. You leave your paper on the seat as you leave and are public enema #2, public bastard. They don’t publish the litter in the noose hanging from a camera in next week’s issue.

@colliecandle – Did I say that ? No !
It can do nothing about single slappers and not too much (except at port of entry)
to stop illegal immigrants.
However, CCTV is a very effective crime prevention and detection tool. Also, if coupled with an effective police response, it can dramaticallly reduce or even completely stop anti social behaviour.
Next question………………………. ?

colliecandle 02.03.11 at 5:12 am

@davehardinguk and you think all the cctv is going to stop illegal immigrants and dole bludgers do you?

davehardinguk 02.03.11 at 5:44 am

Not guilty – nothjing to fear !
What’s with all the police state crap posted here ? Where is your voice in fighting off the invasion of the EU, illegal immigrants, dole scroungers, single slappers scrounging off welfare, chav scum brawling in the high street ?
Oh look – it’s gone quiet !

oh shit britain

mooeythemooseman 02.03.11 at 6:08 am

The very act of them trying to justify this action is the thing that haunts me. How can they say they are protecting Britain’s liberty and acting for the common good, when they are wasting tax payer dollars and stripping away peoples personal liberty’s and privacy. How can one justify this, protecting against minor crimes that cost society a lot less than the installation of this, and business and the government are pushing for more.
Don’t take this shit from your government, get mad, get angry.

axellerose1 02.03.11 at 7:05 am

“Unilever company is now secretly placed GPS tracking devices in boxes of laundry detergent, then using teams of company agents with surveillance electronics to track customers to their homes.
Why would Unilever do this? It’s all part of a new marketing campaign, if you can believe that.”

Welcome to the future and it all comes under the veil of crime and terrorism, what better way to police the state than using the “it’s for your own safety” notion.
Well when you have an illinformed public it is easy to do as you please as long as you follow law, and who makes the laws again?
Lol wakey wakey, England is the first but many will follow.
